In vitro fertilization (IVF), a.k.a. test tube baby treatment, is a fertility treatment where the female patient’s eggs are joined by her male partner’s sperm outside of the woman’s body. Later, the inseminated egg will be placed in a test tube or petri dish for a few days, hence the name.

After ovulation induction, the patient waits for ovarian follicles to mature. Then the woman’s mature eggs are removed with a transvaginal ultrasound and get fertilized in a few hours depending on egg maturity. The egg is then placed in a petri dish under observation. If artificial insemination works, the fertilized egg develops into an embryo in 2-3 days and then a blastocyst in 5-6 days before the implantation of the blastocyst starts in the uterus. The extra embryos can be frozen to preserve future fertility.
