An intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure is carried out by having her husband’s semen washed and screened and then getting the most active sperms concentrated. Then the selected sperm will be placed directly into the woman’s uterus using a catheter when she is at the time of ovulation. After that, the sperm may swim toward an egg and make pregnancy happen.  

IUI only uses small amounts of drugs and does not require anesthesia. IUI is an easy treatment for infertility.

【IUI is recommended in the following situations】

1.The female patient has at least one functioning fallopian tube and ovulates normally.

2.An abnormal semen analysis (with WHO guidelines) is found in the male partner of the infertile couple

3.The male partner has one or more of the following problems: erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation, or hypospadias.

4.The female patient has cervical abnormalities or anti-sperm antibodies or produces less cervical mucus.

5.The female patient has difficulty getting pregnant due to unknown reasons.

【The IUI Procedure】

1.A fertility drug is used to increase the number of ovarian follicles and the likelihood of pregnancy.

2.The IUI treatment is usually performed to the  female patient during the 3rd to 5th day of the menstrual cycle. The amount of drug given at specified times may vary from one person to another.
